Empower Your Language Skills!

The Program

WHAT IS CINEMALINGUA?

May the language be with you! CINEMALINGUA is an intercultural concept that empowers language skills and language security. In a small group workshop, participants create a short film in the target language, for example in French. CINEMALINGUA combines experience and media education for language learning – from conceptualisation to the finished film, participants work together on all necessary steps of film production using the target language. The focus is on developing a feeling for the other language and the foreign culture, as well as on activating or deepening language skills. The result: language empowerment.

STARTING POINT

The novel idea for the project was developed based on teaching experience in French lessons at schools, colleges and universities. It was a tailor-made project for all language learners who have a basic knowledge of the French language but often lack sufficient language and communication experience. French is often thought as a second foreign language, and often for only relatively short periods of time (three to four years).

It can be very difficult to get the language learner to speak freely, and only relatively few people dare studying at a French institution or moving to a French-speaking country for school or for an internship, for example.

Currently CINEMALINGUA is offered for the target language French. Experiences in Spanish have already been collected as well. Based on demand, we are of course open to work with other languages – just contact us!

APPROACH

To create an activating foreign language teaching concept, we were looking for a way to motivate learners while forcing them to speak actively. Learners actively take on different roles as they communicate about technology, content and design. The entire interdisciplinary project is conducted in the target language. A native speaker who is familiar with the technical equipment moderates the communication and the organisational implementation of the project.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

Test runs have shown that it is possible to compress the demanding action- and project-oriented lessons within the framework of the following seven work modules. These modules work best together as a whole, but certain modules can be treated individually by arrangement.

  1. Module: Short film analysis
  2. Module: Concept
  3. Module: Production
  4. Module: Shooting
  5. Module: Post-production
  6. Module: Presentation
  7. Module: Debriefing

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

1) Interdisciplinary combination of activating foreign language teaching and film and media technology:

The interdisciplinary teaching project “Cinemalingua” is a modern approach to activating learning. The activation and extension of foreign language skills is combined with the acquisition of in-depth knowledge in dealing with modern media. Didactic materials for the development of specialized vocabulary are provided in advance, and during an intensive seminar all communication takes place in the target language – currently mainly in French.

2) Transfer to other languages and other educational institutions:

In further steps, the didactic concept will be applied in another language. For this we are looking for interested lecturers who teach as native speakers of educational institutions. At the same time, experience could be gained on the transferability of the teaching concept to schools and other educational institutions where language teachers can not usually also be film experts and media technicians. This second step also tests which technical knowledge is central and essential for the project implementation. This can give indications of what a course of study might look like, with which the didactic concept can be imparted to selected language teachers who can pass on their knowledge as multipliers.

Based on demand, we are of course open to working with other languages. Just contact us!
